The “New” Cough Suppressant

cough medicineA new discovery has been made in the cough suppressants department. Traditionally, cough syrup that contains codeine has been the way to go as the top ingredient found to suppress coughing. Of course we have all been warned not to drive or operate heavy machinery when taking codeine-laden cough syrups, because of the side effect of drowsiness, and dryness in the mouth.

It has been found that dark chocolate can be 33% more effective in suppressing coughing than the more traditional cough syrups that contain codeine. The dark chocolate contains a substance called theobromine, which is the ingredient responsible for quelling the cough reflex. It has been found to affect the vagus nerve, which is what causes the cough trigger to happen when it is irritated.

Now parents should have less trouble getting their children to take their cough medicine, as it could be dark chocolate instead of the cough medicine. Regular cough medicine has been shown in studies to affect the immune system. People who take cough suppressant during a cold appear to have the cold 30% longer than those folks who do not use the medication.

The amount of dark chocolate recommended is about 2 ounces for an adult and a half-ounce for children. Milk chocolate does not contain enough theobromine to be effective, so dark chocolate is the only chocolate to be used.
